Prof. Paulo J.S Cruz, born 1964 in Porto, Portugal, is a graduate in Civil Engineering of the University of Porto (1987). He holds a MSc in Structural Engineering by the University of Porto (1991) and PhD in Civil Engineering by the Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain (1995). Currently, he is a full Professor of Construction and Technology at the School of Architecture of the University of Minho. He has also been Dean of the School of Architecture of the University of Minho (2004-2011), where he is also the Director of the research unit Lab2PT and of the Laboratory on Construction and Technology. Since 1987 he researches in the domain of specialization of special structures. His main research focus is on Structural Glass, bridging the gap between architecture and structural engineering, promoting the comprehension of complex architectural and structural applications and exploring the use of glass.
Prof. Cruz was an active member of the EU COST Action TU0905 “Structural Glass – Novel Design Methods and Next Generation Products”. Furthermore, he is the Portuguese delegate in CEN TC250 WG3 (Eurocode on Structural Glass) and founding member of the European Federation of Structural Glass Laboratories.
Chair of several international conferences: ICSA2013 – The 2nd International Conference on Structures and Architecture, Guimarães, Portugal, July (2013); ICSA2010 – The 1st International Conference on Structures and Architecture, Guimarães, Portugal, July (2010); ICSB’08 – The 7th International Symposium on Steel Bridges, Guimarães, Portugal, June (2008); IABMAS’06 – The 3rd International Conference on Bridge Maintenance, Safety and Management, Porto, Portugal, July (2006); CIMAD’04 – The 1st Iberian Conference on Timber Construction, Guimarães, Portugal, March (2004). Since 2002 is the Secretary of the Executive Committee of IABMAS – International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety. Since 2006 is the President of the Portuguese Group of IABMAS. In 1997 founded the Portuguese Steelwork Association.
He has lectured at many international conferences, among which Glasstec 2014 – International Trade Fair for Glass Production, Processing, Products.
